An Overlanders Guide to CB radio selection and Installation - by Pat Haggerty

Choosing a CB Radio
CB radios come in many shapes, sizes, and have different capabilities. One essential thing to understand about CB radios is that all CB's are created with the same amount of transmission power. The FCC regulates CB communication to 4 watts of power, and therefore makes choosing a CB not about the power, but about how it fits the needs and you and your vehicle... read more

X elles, 'Do the crazy thing'! - by Rachelle Croft

X elles Many women call this, a life changing event. I would not disagree. The Rallye Aiche Des Gazelles is one of those things in your life that you either choose to get through, or quit. Quitting was never an option, so my teammate Julie Meddows and I learned very quickly just how strong and capable we were. From starting in Paris, France, with very little English translation, shipping a car overseas, driving through Morocco with little direction, and finally, starting the race in Morocco, any of these things would have been life changing alone, but we hadn't even started... read more

What holds you back? - by Jordan Gazy

Jordan Gazy My name is Jordan Michael Gazy. I am 29 years old and am currently studying Food and Nutrition at Montana State University. I have been interested in the exercise portion of health and wellness for as long as I can remember. It wasn't until a life changing diagnosis of Crohn's Disease at age twenty when my interests broadened to Nutrition (symptoms began at age twelve). Before that pivotal point in my life food was fuel nothing more. Just put enough in to keep the body running. Any more information than that just complicated things. Oh how ones perspective can change with a little life experience! The Jordan of today desires to know not only what every piece of what we call food is made up of, but the exact effects that nutrient will have on the human body. I also have a desire to bring awareness to Crohn's disease and inspire those already diagnosed or with other disabilities to live a FULL life!... read more

What's in your kit? - by Clay Croft

Clay Croft There is a special place for gear or "kit" in overlanding. It often is the larger part of our discussions when getting together. Good gear no doubt, is a strong element to a successful trip. Sometimes, its the very element that turns a disaster into a manageable adventure. Everyone has their own take on whats important and what isn't. Thats ok, thats in part what makes us who we are as overlanders. I believe that the best gear is what helps get you off the couch, keeps you out there, and will bring you back. This can be a fridge, so you have better meal options on the trail, a certain type of tent that you just can't wait to sleep in, or a winch you know you can rely on if things get a little too hairy. Whatever is that personal gear you decide to buy, it might make the difference on whether you go out again or not... read more

Overland Rally - by Ryan Erickson

Ryan Erickson and Jeff Downer So Clay thought it would be a good idea for us to head down to the Overland Rally in Hollister, CA this October. We had some discussions, and figured it would be good to take one vehicle and the bike down there. Because the rally was several days, and mid-week, only 3 of us could make it. It would be Clay, Jeff D, and I. In getting all of the prep work together for the trip, a last minute decision was made to trailer the bike down... read more

What's a Blog - by Jeff Downer

Jeff Downer I don't know what the heck I am supposed to write about. Blog isn't even a real word. What kind of normal person writes a blog? Oh, wait, I'm not normal. Sometimes I wonder if I'm even a person. So I guess to write a blog I have to believe that the universe on the World Wide Web actually gives a darn about what I put in this blog. This is hard for me to understand because I only read one blog. It's a blog that has meaning to the author but I also know and relate to the author. So now I am supposed to write a blog to/for people who don't know if they relate to me or not. (This is a very important side note; I just saw a girl who looked like Winnie Cooper from The Wonder Years and I tried to not type it in here but it was just to important to not mention.) In my mind this is more like a personal journal that is open to the world to read. It's as if a part of ones (me) privacy is invaded for the greater good of what is now becoming mainstream media. I think I really don't like blogs because I have this pre-conceived idea that people who read/write blogs are the same kind of people whom watch/produce reality TV shows, which are generally degrading to humanity. I would like to believe that people can create fulfilling lives of their own so they don't have the "need" to live vicariously through a blog or a TV show... read more
